Try getting a rocks and minerals guide at Borders or any other bookstore. Get one of the National Audobon Society. Or just keep searching online. I don’t know much about this, but ask other people, or go to a jewelry store and ask the experts.

If you and your daughter would also like to *make your own* faux turquoise beads, we do that with polymer clay and it’s a lot of fun. They’re almost impossible to tell from the real thing if done reasonably well too.
That way you can also make the beads any size, shape, or color you want, and even change the type and amount of veining in larger beads, etc.

There are lessons for making faux turquoise in various ways, as well as links to photos of many of them, on this page at my polymer clay “encyclopedia” website if you want to check them out:

And if you want to make other “faux” stones and materials from polymer clay, check out these pages for everything from faux ivory to faux jade, pearl, amber, metals of various kinds, etc, etc..:–many.htm

I use Fire mountain gems a lot but if you have searched there already here is a place I have used previously as well. They are on ebay as well but I might suggest buying directly from them online.
